Tuesday, November 3, 1998 Published at 01:10 GMT UK Diana's car 'not sabotaged' ![]() The Mercedes did contact a white Fiat The technical report on the car Diana, Princess of Wales was travelling in when she died says the Mercedes had no mechanical faults prior to the crash and had not been sabotaged. The French police report looks to reinforce a final inquiry ruling that the crash was caused by drink and speed. Released more than a year after studying the wrecked Mercedes, the report was handed to inquiry Judge Herve Stephan.
It is believed to be the last piece in the inquiry jigsaw before the judge is ready with his long-awaited verdict. But it will be another two months at least before that is published. As expected, the technical report says the Mercedes was travelling at about 62mph when it crashed in an underpass in Paris. Twice the legal speed The figure is twice the legal speed limit - but not as excessive as claimed at the time of the accident. The report also confirms that the Mercedes made contact with a white Fiat Uno.
Diana was fatally injured in the crash and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed was killed instantly. The third fatality was driver Henri Paul, a security man at the Ritz Hotel in Paris. Paul's body was found to contain levels of alcohol three times the legal drink-drive limit. The only survivor was bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, who suffered serious face and back injuries. |
