Firefighters tackle nightclub blaze

The blaze has caused travel problems in the city
Firefighters in Aberdeen have tackled a blaze which broke out in an empty nightclub in the centre of the city.

Thirty officers raced to the scene after the emergency services were alerted to the blaze at Castro's Bar just before 0400 BST on Tuesday.

Crews brought the blaze under control allaying initial fears it may spread to adjoining buildings.

No one was injured in the blaze, but parts of the city centre have been closed off to traffic.

Several roads in the area will remain closed while investigators examine the damaged building.

Union Street has partially reopened but remains closed eastbound between Market Street and Broad Street.

Police said delays were expected

Grampian Police said the road closures would impact on traffic in the city.

John Morris, assistant divisional officer of Grampian Fire Brigade, said his officers faced a difficult task in tackling and isolating the blaze.

"The crews had a difficult job in trying to contain the fire because of the spread form the basement upwards through the voids within the construction of the building," he said.

"Equally they had a difficult job in trying to stop the fire from going further, and gaining entry to the premises which were locked fast."
