Villa promise attack despite lead

Ian Taylor (right): Three Euro goals last season

Aston Villa go into the second leg of the Uefa Cup tie against Spaniards Celta Vigo in an unusual position.

They need only avoid defeat to progress - a contrast from last season when wins were needed in all four rounds they played in.

Ian Taylor, who scored in three of those four games, returns to European action for Tuesday's match,

The Birmingham born player returns along with fellow midfielder Alan Thompson after both served suspensions during the 1-0 win in Spain.

Villa must do without goalkeeper Mark Bosnich, and recent signings Paul Merson and Steve Watson.

The Australian has still not fully recovered from a shoulder injury which has kept him out of the last four matches, and Michael Oakes will continue to deputise.

The two late arrivals at Villa Park this season will only become eligible to play in the competition if the club reach the quarter-finals in March.

However Gregory will have no worries about playing Julian Joachim in Merson's absence after the pacy striker snatched the goal in Spain a fortnight ago.

Last season saw Villa learn how to win home legs in Europe, with Bordeaux, Athletic Bilbao, Steaua Bucharest and Atletico Madrid all beaten at Villa Park.

In the end, the 2-1 win against the side from Spain's capital was not quite enough, and Athletico went through on away goals.

But despite the luxury of only needing a draw this time, Gregory insisted his side will not sit back.

He said: "We will approach it like any normal game. Obviously a clean sheet is the most important thing for us, but anything we score will make it that much easier.

"We are taking nothing for granted. They were very good out there and proved why they are doing so well in the Spanish League this season. Technically they are a very good side.

"Vigo have not been one of the major forces in Spanish football and they are a bit like us this season in being a bit of a surprise packet.

"We will be looking to put in another good performance, and maybe what we achieved over there helped in making people sit up and take a bit of notice of us."

Most of Villa's first team should be fresh after sitting out the Worthington Cup defeat at Stamford Bridge last Wednesday, and then being forced to rest by Chelsea's inability to beat the weather for Saturday's league game.

Celta were active at the weekend drawing 2-2 away to Santander and flew into Birmingham on Sunday.

They underwent a training session at Villa's Bodymoor Heath complex and were training under the Villa Park floodlights on Monday night.
