Germany's Social Democrats nominate next president
The ruling Social Democrats in Germany, the SPD, have nominated their veteran politician, Johannes Rau, to become the country's next president.
Mr Rau, who is sixty-eight was the SPD's candidate in 1987 for Chancellor but was defeated by Helmut Kohl.
He is is expected to be formally elected by members of parliament at a federal convention next May.
