Afghan prisoner exchange deal fails

Reports from Afghanistan say prisoner exchanges between the Taleban and their opponents, as agreed last week, have not yet taken place.

A senior Taleban official, speaking to the BBC, accused the opposition forces of Ahmad Shah Masoud of trying to swap prisoners who were civilians for his own fighters.

The anti-Taleban alliance has denied this, and accused the Taleban of failing to provide a list of the names of its prisoners, as had been agreed.

The prisoner-exchange was mediated by an Afghan, Syed Jalal, who works as a businessman in Saudi Arabia.
