Sullivan set for Wales debut

Anthony Sullivan: Could make a startling debut for Wales at Wembley

Rugby league star Anthony Sullivan is on course for a sensational start to his union career.

The Great Britain and St Helens wing, who only switched codes last week on a three-month contract with Welsh rebels Cardiff, could feature when Wales tackle world champions South Africa at Wembley next week.

Sullivan has yet to play in the union game, but Wales coach Graham Henry has left a wing berth open in his 23-man squad for the Springboks.

Sullivan, along with Llanelli pair Wayne Proctor and Garan Evans, are challenging for that place alongside Cardiff's Gareth Thomas and Pontypridd's Dafydd James.

Sullivan has two chances to impress Henry before the Test as Cardiff face a rearranged Welsh Cup match against minnows Cylfynydd and English Premiership club West Hartlepool next Saturday.

Sullivan, Proctor and Evans have been invited to train with the Wales squad, and Henry plans to announce his starting line-up next Monday.

Richmond forward Scott Quinnell, who was facing a Rugby Football Union disciplinary hearing on Monday evening, has been included, together with his brother Craig.

In addition, Henry finds a place for Ebbw Vale forward Mark Jones, who has just completed a three-match ban imposed after he was sent off for punching Pontypridd's Ian Gough in a club match last month.

Sale's former New Zealand All Black Shane Howarth is one of two full-backs chosen, and he faces a straight fight with Cardiff's Mike Rayer.

Swansea centre Mark Taylor is set to fill the substantial midfield void alongside Scott Gibbs after British Lion Allan Bateman withdrew at the weekend after undergoing essential shoulder surgery.
