Party at the Palace CD: Your views
The Queen joined the performers on stage at the end
Party at the Palace proved to be one of the highlights of the Queen's Golden Jubilee weekend, with an impressive line-up of pop stars old and new. The concert at Buckingham Palace has now been released as a CD, including tracks from Queen, Cliff Richard, Ozzy Osbourne, Shirley Bassey and Elton John. "The technical standard of the recording and production is not perfect, a slightly distant sound quality persisting on some numbers," wrote BBC News Online's Finlo Rohrer. "But the mark of a good album is capturing the event - which in this case was magical - more than the fine details of the performances", he added. But what do you think?
Does it recreate the atmosphere? How do the performers sound without the visual spectacle to complement them? I was lucky enough to get a ticket to the Party at the Palace. Comparing it to the CD, the atmosphere is slightly recreated as they have the people clapping at the ends of songs, but it still isn't the same. In my mind, you can never recreate the whole atmosphere.
How on earth have they not thought to do the obvious and release the entire concert over a couple of CDs? The amount they've released is barely half of the concert - and a lot of the good performances aren't on there. Thank god I recorded it from the TV and didn't wait for the CD to come out.
I thought the album was brilliant and it will always provide me with a reminder of this once in a lifetime occasion. I particularly enjoyed the contribution from Eric Clapton, who hasn't sounded this good since his Cream days.
Anyone caught buying this claptrap should be deemed unfit to handle money. It's not the fact that all the usual get my face on TV for charity vermin appeared (Collins, Clapton, Richard etc). It's the shameless plugging of the Ben Elton/Queen "Musical" that really annoyed me. Who'd have thought Mr "right on" Elton championing a band who played Sun City at the height of apartheid. The utter hidiousness of the whole event turns my stomach.
Great stuff, thoroughly enjoyed it. It's good to see people like Collins, Clapton, Stewart and what remains of Aueen all on the same bill. A great reminder of the great Princes Trust concerts of the 80s. As for Mr Shanks' comments, if you don't like the artist who appeared at the concert, why buy the album?
I enjoyed the entire event on TV and will most probably purchase the CD if the proceeds are going to charity. As for Mr Shanks, what's your problem? If it really annoyed you why didn't you turn off the telly? And if you're not going to buy the CD, who cares? With self-opinionated anti-British people like you around, who needs enemies?
This CD is let down by a very erratic selection process. Thankfully, Will (one note) Young's appearance is limited to his murdering of only one classic song, as opposed to the two he brutalised on the night. Similarly, no Ricky Martin, Blue or other third rate wannabes are included, which is all for the good. However, where is Bohemian Rhapsody - regularly voted the most popular song of the last century ? Where is the historic and moving teaming of McCartney and Clapton in tribute to George Harrison? It's good, but could be so much better.......
I completely agree with Andy Shanks' comments, 98% of the concert was utter drivel. I only tuned in to see Ozzy Osbourne, I also enjoyed Tony Iommi showing the rest how the guitar should really be played. The sycophantic "talent" presenting also got right up my nose. The only remotely funny moments came from a cross dressing Antipodean pensioner!
The CD is fandabbydozy. Although I only saw the concert on TV it is still worth purchasing. Atomic Kitten rule!
In reference to Andy Shanks' comment about Queen playing Sun City in '85 at the height of apartheid, the concert was specifically for a mixed race crowd - although the good old British tabloids blew it up out of all proportion, so much so that Roger Taylor wish the entire fiasco had never happened. As for the CD, glad I caught it all on video frankly!
Musically the whole thing was nonsense, the same tired old duffers, same old unoriginal new groups, does anyone remember when Rock'n'Roll meant being anti-establishment, and I mean Rock'n'Roll not that bland pap that Sir Cliff the self proclaimed King Of Rock'nRoll churns out. I've watched the whole concert and it was the highglight of music today. It is stupid for Queen to preform without Freddie because the song isn't nearly the same with Will Young or Roger Taylor singing.
