Safety pleas follow mountain road crash
The Horseshoe Pass was reopened in March after flood damage

A car carrying four passengers which careered 150 feet over the edge of the Llangollen Horseshoe Pass in north Wales has prompted calls for improved safety measures.

Dyfed Edwards, the Plaid Cymru Welsh Assembly candidate for Clwyd South, has urged Denbighshire County Council to upgrade fencing at the accident blackspot.

The North Wales Air Ambulance, and emergency services attended the scene on Thursday where all four passengers were rescued.

One person was taken to Wrexham Maelor hospital but no one was seriously injured.

"This was a major incident where four people were very fortunate to escape with only minor injuries," said Mr Edwards.

"Local residents at the nearby village of Pentredwr are naturally concerned about their safety when such an incident occurs.

"The Horseshoe Pass is a well known beauty spot but some of the sections of the road do require care when driving.

"I feel that the authorities need to look at the situation carefully and consider implementing safety measures at this particular spot.

"I have contacted Denbighshire County Council and pressed for appropriate warning signs to be placed at this location and the fencing upgraded from the present wire fence.

"I am aware that the local community council have been calling for such measures for many years and I support them in their stance," he added.

The Horseshoe Pass reopened in March after flooding partially collapsed the road in November 2000.

Denbighshire council has said the issue of safety along the road has already been addressed.

The local authority have said there was an extensive refurbishment of signs in the area in Autumn 2001 and chevrons were placed in key locations.

Safety fencing has been erected in the past where there are known regular problems.

The council claim there are plenty of reflective posts and verge markers, and warning signs are regularly checked to ensure all reasonable safety standards are met."

The road is a direct link into the small town of Llangollen and is a busy route.
