Gabonese television has broadcast the country's first marathon charity appeal, or telethon, to raise money to help fight AIDS.

Viewers pledged more than two hundred thousand dollars during the seven-hour broadcast.

National statistics show that more than twenty thousand people in Gabon -- one in fifty-five of the population -- has the virus that often results in AIDS.
