Nigel Jones

Date of birth

30 March 1948

Political profile

Nigel Jones' first victory in Cheltenham in 1992 was marred by local controversy over the selection of black barrister John Taylor as the Conservative candidate.

However, victories in the two successive general elections have confirmed him as a popular figure in his own right.

He has worked obsessively to ensure that he is well known in the constituency and consequently has a fairly low Commons profile.

Since 2002, he has sat on the Commons public accounts select committee.

A former computer analyst, he often speaks on technology issues and also has an interest in sport.

He is also a leading member of the Parliamentary Beer Group and has called for reductions in duty.

In 2000, he was seriously injured and an assistant killed, in an attack in his constituency office.
