Simon Thomas

Date of birth

28 December 1963

Political profile

Simon Thomas was a high profile entrant to the Commons when he won the Ceredigion by-election in 2000, following the resignation of Cynog Dafis.

He initially attracted attention by being the first male MP to wear an earring in the Commons, but has subsequently become known for his high profile parliamentary presence.

He frequently holds adjournment debates and is a persistent questioner of ministers.

He is helped in this by the size of Plaid Cymru's parliamentary representation.

With just three colleagues, he lays claim to a large number of different portfolios.

While, like all Plaid Cymru members, a committed advocate of the rights and needs of Wales, he is also a progressive radical on general political issues.

He is very interested in environmental issues and supports a clutch of green causes as well as being a keen cyclist.

He was also responsible for articulating Plaid Cymru's opposition, as a party, to the bombing of Afghanistan.
