Political profile

Tom Brake was one of the five Liberal Democrat MPs who were surprise winners of south west London constituencies from the Conservatives in 1997 - all of whom managed to hold their seats in 2001.

A former computer consultant and energetic local councillor, he is on the left of the party.

He is an active member of Greenpeace and Amnesty and came into politics in 1983 via human rights activism.

After a stint as the party's junior transport spokesman, he moved to international development in 2003.
