Nick Ainger

Date of birth

24 October 1949

Political profile

Nick Ainger was a docker and trades unionist before his election in 1992 for Pembroke.

He survived his constituency being split in half and managed to retain over the next elections a seat which is more marginal than recent results suggest.

He is a moderate, pragmatic member who in the last parliament tended slightly to the left of the government.

He is a stalwart of the campaign against hunting and has expressed his "serious doubts" over the proposed US Missile Defence.

However, his loyalty was assured by his position as PPS to three successive Welsh secretaries.

He has been appointed Welsh whip, a job which means by convention that he will not speak in the chamber.
