Julie Morgan

Date of birth

2 November 1944

Political profile

When Julie Morgan was first elected to the Commons in 1997, she had spent more than 10 years in social work.

She has a very strong interest in race and gender equality and supports positive action to promote this.

She is a consistent advocate of wider access to childcare and is also interested in international affairs, including being a member of the Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign.

She initially joined the Labour benches as a loyalist, but has quietly been moving towards a more sceptical position.

She abstained on cuts to lone parent benefits and has strongly criticised the government's treatment of asylum seekers.

Her husband is the Welsh First Secretary Rhodri Morgan.
