Julian Brazier

Date of birth

24 July 1953

Political profile

Under Iain Duncan Smith's leadership, Julian Brazier was created an opposition whip in September 2001. He was then appointed a junior work and pensions spokesman in the Tory leader's second re-shuffle.

For three months in 2003, he served as a shadow home affairs minister before Michael Howard stepped in as leader when he joined the Conservative international affairs team.

Prior to this, his closest brush with the frontbench since his election in 1987 had been a few years as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Gillian Shephard. He had been regarded as a perennial backbencher.

He is on the right of the party, with very firmly Thatcherite views on the economy and Europe.

He is a former Territorial Army officer and an advocate of high levels of defence spending.

His most significant contributions to debates, however, are on moral issues.

He is the chairman of the Conservative Family Campaign and takes a traditionalist views on sexuality and the role of the family, as well as opposing abortion and embryo research.
