Indian arrrest over Muslim property scam

Police in the Indian city of Calcutta say they have arrested a Muslim leader in connection with a multi-million dollar property scandal.

The man, Haminul Huda, is thought to be involved in the illegal sale of a number of religious properties or Wakf to local developers.

Many of the buildings are located in prime urban sites.

Mr Huda was a former member of the Muslim body in charge of the properties in West Bengal, the West Bengal Wakf board.

The West Bengal government conducted a judicial enquiry into the affair five years ago, although the report of its findings was never made public.

Members of the opposition in West Bengal have called for the state government to publish the report; they also want the Indian federal police to begin an investigation.
