Turks and Kurds battle after football victory
Turkey win 1-0 against Senegal
Golden goal scorer Ilhan Mansiz (r) celebrates
Fighting broke out between a group of Turkish football fans celebrating their team's World Cup win and a number of Kurdish men.

One man suffered head injuries and missiles were thrown as the violence spilled out onto St Ann's Road in Haringey.

Police estimate about 100 Turks were involved in the scuffles with up to 50 Kurds following the 1-0 victory over Senegal on Saturday.

A number of people were taken to police stations in north London as officers tried to keep the groups apart.

Police divide

A Metropolitan police spokesman said territorial support officers were also called in to help quell the disturbances which broke out just before 1600 BST.

"Some missiles were thrown between the rival groups," the spokesman said.

The men continued to shout insults at each other as officers kept them apart.

A 25-year-old man was taken to hospital by ambulance suffering head injuries, but his condition was not thought to be life threatening.

Fighting between fans also marred post-match celebrations in the aftermath of England's victory over Denmark.

Police in riot gear were brought in after a number of fans rampaged through Stoke-on-Trent, throwing bottles and glasses at officers.

Sixteen people were arrested following the violence which police blamed on drink and "aggressive antics".
