Mayor dies in helicopter crash

Stranded Honduran boy attracts attention of a helicopter

The mayor of the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, Carlos Castellanos, has been killled in a helicopter crash as he was out co-ordinating emergency relief operations in the city.

News of the crash - in which three other people also died - has stunned Hondurans already reeling from Tropical Storm Mitch. More than 230 have died people in Honduras alone.

Mr Castellanos was a popular politician seen as a likely presidential candidate in the 2001 elections.

He was elected mayor in December as a candidate for the opposition National Party, campaigning under the nickname "El Gordito" - the little fat guy.

Meanwhile in Guatemala, 12 people were killed and six others injured when their small plane went down in bad weather. Several are thought to be American Christian missionaries.

US coastguards are continuing their search for a large sailing boat with 31 crew on board, which went missing in severe storms almost a week ago.
