Pressure on Pinochet continues

Pressure is continuing for the extradition to Spain of the former Chilean military ruler, General Augusto Pinochet -- who's been undergoing medical treatment in London.

There've been further demonstrations outside the British parliament, where later this week Law Lords will make a final ruling on the legality of his arrest on charges of torture and genocide.

In the Chilean capital, Santiago, protestors gathered at a memorial for those who died or disappeared under General Pinochet's rule on the traditional remembrance day for the dead Dia de los Muertos.

If the Law Lords order his release, the General, who was detained two weeks ago, is widely expected return to Chile immediately, where he has immunity from prosecution.

The governments of Britain and Spain say the General's case is not on the agenda for a meeting of both prime ministers in London on Monday : but the BBC Madrid correspondent says is is such an emotional issue that it will be difficult for them to avoid.
