The second most senior bishop in the Church of England has attacked the church for being dull, issue-driven and exclusive.
The Archbishop of York, Dr David Hope, said the church desperately needed to recover what he called God's vision of wholeness, so that it could address the task of converting people to Christianity.
A spokesman for Dr Hope denied suggestions that his comments were a veiled attack on the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey.
