The Colombian army says it has freed eighteen hostages, who were kidnapped by dissident left-wing rebels almost a month ago.

Among the hostages were a popular Venezuelan singer and six members of her band.

One of the rebels was killed during the raid by counter-insurgency troops, in a remote mountainous area near the Venezuelan border.

The other rebels are reported to have escaped.
