Police in India's northeastern state of Tripura say separatist rebels have kidnapped fourteen Bengali settlers in the past twenty-four hours.

They say the National Liberation Front of Tripura has carried out many large scale abductions for ransom in recent years.

Correspondents say many families pay up with out reporting to the authorities.
