Anti-government demonstration in Kuala Lumpur

Hundreds of people have taken part in a peaceful anti-government protestoutside a mosque in the centre of the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Demonstrators carried pictures of the detained former deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, and chanted demands for the resignation of the prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad.

The demonstration was in an area where violent clashes erupted a week ago.

The BBC South East Asia correspondent says tight security has been in place throughout Kuala Lumpur in anticipation of the demonstrations, which come two days before Mr Anwar is due to appear in court on charges of corruption and sodomy.
