Chinese police to move on gamblers

The chinese police have called for a renewed campaign against gambling following what they believe is an increase in betting on football matches.

An official news agency said illegal gambling had triggered other crimes such as murder, robbery and even bombing.

The police say they will focus their attention on illegal gambling dens in hotel rooms.

The BBC Beijing correspondent says the World Cup and the English premier league attract large television audiences.

He says the new enthusiasm for football has combined with a traditional passion for gambling.
