Fiji steals a march on time as the dawning of the new millenium nears

The south pacific island of Fiji has introduced Daylight Saving Time for the first time in a move which could bolster its claim to be the first place to see in the new millenium.

The Fijiian government says the main reasons for the time change is to improve productivity and reduce road accidents.

But correspondents say it also hopes the move will boost Fiji's ability to compete with other pacific islands in the effort to attract tourists to witness the dawning of the new millenium.
