Storm kills 130 in Central America

A state of emergency has been declared in the Central American state of Honduras and throughout much of neighbouring Nicaragua as the authorities struggle to cope with the effects of Tropical Storm Mitch.

Tens of thousands of people were left homeless or were trapped by floodwaters as rivers burst their banks after days of torrential rain.

Many are without food or shelter.

There have also been reports of mudslides and many roads and bridges have been swept away, hindering rescue efforts.

At least one hundred and thirty people have died in the storm -- but many more are missing.
