Wall Street market report

Monday close

US shares closed up 114.05 points or 1.3% at 8,706.15, as investors remained confident that policymakers would take steps to prevent further global financial turmoil.

In their first November session, stocks built on October's 10% gains, its best one-month advance in 11 years. At one point, the Dow index peaked 150 points.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq index rose 29.49 points, or almost 1.7%, at 1,800.88.

Sentiment was further helped by a fresh batch of mergers, and expectations of more rate cuts both in the US and abroad.
