Bryant arrest man freed

The scene where Mrs Bryant was found

A man who was being held by police investigating the murder of Cornish housewife Linda Bryant has been released.

Detectives say no further action will be taken after the 48-year-old was freed from Newquay police station shortly before 6pm on Saturday.

The man appeared in court on Friday night when police asked for more time to question him.

Stephen Hall reports on the development in the murder inquiry
Mrs Bryant was killed as she walked the family's pet lurcher dog near their home in Ruan High Lanes, near Truro, Cornwall, on 20 October.

On Friday, her daughters Erin and Lee Bryant said at a news conference in St Austell that finding their 41-year-old mother's killer would be the next best thing to "bringing her back".

Mrs Bryant, a part-time cleaner, died in a field gateway from stab wounds to her chest, neck and back.

Lee, a 21-year-old dental nurse who lives in Truro said the family had to "keep going".

She added: "Mum would want us to. We really want this person caught. That is the main thing. The next best thing to bringing her back at the moment is getting this person caught.

The girls' father was still too upset to speak about his wife's death.

But she added: "Because we cannot arrange a funeral, we cannot grieve properly until after that.

"It feels, at the moment, as if she has just gone away and we are not sure when she is coming back."

Clinton Rogers reports from St Austell
Her mother "loved her family and was quite happy being at home, having the housework done and walking the dog".

"She was just happy with life. She was a brilliant mum," said Lee.

Lee has a 10-month-old baby boy Keelan and said her mother "adored him and was looking forward to Christmas - she is not going to see that now".

Her mother loved Keelan and babysat him while she was at work, Lee added.

Detective Supt Boarland: Officers are still searching for the murder weapon and Mrs Bryant's spectacles
Erin, 19, had said earlier: "We're still finding it impossible to understand how anyone would or could do this to her.

"She was and always will be the best mum we could ever have wished for and we'll miss her desperately."

"If you know anything or if there is anyone you are concerned about, please think of us and come forward."

Next Tuesday police will stage a reconstruction of Mrs Bryant's last walk.

PC Sam Cignaux will be partnered by the Bryants' dog, Jay.

Devon and Cornwall Police, who have played down links with the murder of 14-year-old Kate Bushell near Exeter in November 1997, have received more than 1,000 calls from the public.

A criminal psychologist has been called in to help a team of 120 officers who are hunting for the killer.
