Senior Taleban members publicly punished in Afghanistan

Three senior Taleban officials in Afghanistan have been publicly whipped for embezzlement and accepting bribes.

The punishments were administered in Kabul sports stadium in front of thousands of people.

The men were also sentenced to six months imprisonment by a Taleban military tribunal.

One of the three was a senior officer in what Taleban calls the ministry for promotion of virtue and the prevention of vice, which acts as a religious police force.

Another was the head of Taleban intelligence department and the third was a court official. The BBC Kabul correspondent says the men are thought to be the most senior Taleban officials to receive such a punishment.
