Brazilian officials travel to Washington to deliver letter of intent to IMF for credit

Senior Brazilian government officials are in Washington to deliver a letter to the International Monetary Fund outlining ways of resolving Brazil's economic problems.

Financial experts say Brazil must commit itself to policies aimed at strengthening its economy if it is to secure credit agreements worth between thirty and forty-five billion dollars from the IMF.

On Wednesday the Brazilian finance minister, Pedro Malan, announced an austerity programme designed to resuce the country's battered economy.
