Ombudsman lashes out at U.P Govt

The ombudsman in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Justice Rajeshwar Singh, has criticised successive state governments for not cooperating in the fight against corruption.

The judge writing in a news lettersaid the annual reports of his office had not been submitted to the state assembly for the past eight years and their recommendations had not been implemented.

The ombudsman told the BBC that people have now stopped bringing complaints to him.

He called for the power to initiate investigations into alleged corruption of public servants without having to wait for a formal complaint to be made.
