International conference reviews progress in Albania

European leaders at a one-day conference on Albania have urged the new government there to restore stability, end illegal emigration and promote and protect foreign investment.

Stressing the need for law and order, they said the fight against corruption and smuggling was of paramount importance.

The conference of donor countries was called by the Albanian government to review progress since a similar conference a year ago.

The new prime minister, Pandeli Majko, who took over in September after renewed unrest, said his government was determined to carry through reforms.

The Austrian foreign minister, Wolfgang Schuessel, whose country currently holds the presidency of the European Union, said he hoped the new generation of leaders could achieve the reconciliation the country needed.

Donors have provided some two-hundred-million dollars in aid since the last conference.
