The European Union has formally endorsed a relaxation of sanctions against against Nigeria.
It said it was taking the step to encourage moves towards a return to civilian rule next year promised by the military leader, General Abdulsalami Abubakr.
Diplomatic and sporting sanctions are being eased, but the ban on military cooperation and development aid will remain.
The EU imposed sanctions nearly three years ago after the execution of the Ogoni rights activist and writer, Ken Saro-Wiwa.
