Japan helps fund silk road. RADIO H/L:

Reports from Kyrgyzstan say that Japan has agreed to lend 40 million dollars to modernise a major north-south highway in the former Soviet republic.

Correspondents say the highway is seen as a link in a new Silk Road, the ancient trade route through central Asia.

The loan was agreed during a visit to Japan last week by the Kyrgyz President, Askar Akayev.
