EU set to ease Nigeria sanctions

European Union diplomats are due to meet in Brussels today to consider easing sanctions against Nigeria following the new military government's commitment to return the country to civilian rule next year.

The sanctions to be lifted reportedly include a ban on high-level visits to Nigeria, the issuing of entry visas to members of the military government and a resumption of sporting links.

An arms embargo is to be maintained and a ban on military cooperation and development aid will remain.

The EU imposed sanctions nearly three years ago after the execution of the Ogoni rights activist and writer, Ken Saro-Wiwa.
