Thursday, October 29, 1998 Published at 11:30 GMT World: Africa South African TRC report finally published The final report by South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission has been published. In an official ceremony in Pretoria, the report was handed over to President Mandela who described it as imperfect, but a useful aid to reconciliation. The Commission, which was established to investigate human rights abuses during the apartheid era, has accused leading figures from across the political spectrum of human rights violations. The report says the former president, PW Botha, President Mandela's ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, and the leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, were among leaders individually responsible for gross violations of human rights. The Commission's chairman, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, said the report gave an insight into the perspectives of those who supported and opposed apartheid. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
