Homesick Laudrup to quit Chelsea

Laudrup (seated) tells journalists he wants to leave Chelsea

Brian Laudrup has rocked Chelsea by revealing he wants to leave Stamford Bridge and return to his native Denmark.

The 29-year-old says he is homesick after playing abroad for the past 10 years.

But he dismissed reports that he wanted to leave because he objected to manager Gianluca Vialli's policy of rotating his squad.

Chelsea called a news conference on Thursday to discuss Laudrup's future, following widespread speculation he was on his way to FC Copenhagen.

But while the west London club insisted they had turned down an offer from Copenhagen to take Laudrup on loan until the end of the season, they did admit that it was only a matter of time before he left.

Laudrup revealed he was so keen to return to Denmark that he would accept a significant pay cut to do so:

"What use is money if you are not happy as a private person?" he said. "Every time I have been home, I have wanted to stay a little longer.

"That is where my friends and family are. My wife is 500% behind me. Some fans will be disappointed, but the most disappointed person is myself."

And he added: "It is nothing to do with the rotational system at Chelsea."

'We've done all we can to keep him'

Chelsea managing director Colin Hutchinson insisted the club were keen to hang onto their highly-rated attacking midfielder and had rebuffed Copenhagen's approach.

He said: "No deal whatsoever has been done between Chelsea and Copenhagen for Brian Laudrup.

"We turned down an approach from Copenhagen to take him on loan a couple of weeks ago but that is not to say that something of that nature may not happen in the future."

Hutchinson said he had been involved in negotiations with Laudrup for the past seven weeks, even offering the player the chance to train for part of the week in Denmark in a bid to keep him.

He said no deal would be completed until after Chelsea's return European Cup Winners' Cup second round fixture against Copenhagen next Thursday, but after that it would just seem to be a matter of time before Laudrup leaves.

"We have done everything we can to keep him, we have worked non-stop to make Brian and his family as happy as possible in London but he is a very strong-minded guy and wants to return to Denmark," said Hutchinson.

Laudrup, who quit international football after the World Cup, only joined Chelsea from Rangers in the summer.
