Reds stretched by Bury

Bury's Andy Woodward (left) out runs Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United 2-0 Bury

BBC Radio 5 Live match report
Bury's brave attempts to thwart Manchester United's progress in the Worthington Cup proved ultimately successful.

But with many of United star players not on the pitch it took the Reds 106 minutes to put a goal past goalkeeper Dean Kiely.

A series of inspired saves saw the game go to extra time at 0-0.

The breakthrough came when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer found a rare yard of space among Bury's defenders to drive his shot in off the post from 18 yards.

Four minutes from the end Erik Nevland made it two at four minutes from the end when he forced home Wes Brown's cross.

United now face Nottingham Forest in the next round.

Middlesbrough 2-3 Everton

BBC Radio 5 Live match report
Middlesbrough's attempt to reach a third consecutive League Cup final ended in extra time at the Riverside.

The runners-up of the last two seasons took the lead through Mark Summerbell after 64 minutes.

Three minutes later Duncan Ferguson seized on a sliced clearance by Steve Vickers to equalise.

Ibrahim Bakayoko put Everton ahead in extra time and Don Hutchinson added a third before Hamilton Ricard got one back for Middlesbrough.

Everton now face First Division Sunderland at home in the fourth round.

Derby 1-2 Arsenal

The Gunners' second string managed to beat off Derby's challenge and set up a fourth round tie with holders Chelsea.

BBC Radio 5 Live match report
The result justified manager Arsene Wenger's decision to keep his top stars fresh for Europe and the Premiership.

Arsenal took the lead in the 21st minute when Luis Boa Morte's corner was turned into his own net by Lee Carsley.

Nelson Vivas settled the match with his first Arsenal goal but Dean Sturridge's 85th minute goal ensured a tense final few minutes.

Crewe 0-1 Blackburn

Blackburn striker Chris Sutton bounced back after his sending-off against Arsenal on Sunday to strike the only goal of this Worthington Cup tie.

Sutton had done little in the first 45 minutes but within 60 seconds of the restart he put Rovers ahead.

He latched onto Damien Johnson's pass and drilled the ball first time beyond Jason Kearton and inside the far post.

Rovers then held on for only their third win in 13 matches. They now face Newcastle in the next round.

Birmingham 1-2 Wimbledon

BBC Radio 5 Live match report
Neal Ardley scored twice either side of half time to take Wimbledon through a tricky Worthington Cup tie at St Andrews.

Chris Marsden had put Birmingham ahead in the 34th minute when he headed home a Peter Ndlovu cross at the far post.

But Ardley levelled within 60 seconds from Robbie Earle's pass.

He struck again a minute into the second half, again from an Earle pass.

The Dons now go on to face Bolton in the fourth round.

Leeds 1-0 Bradford

BBC Radio 5 Live match report
Harry Kewell claimed his first goal for six months to give David O'Leary a win in his first full game in charge.

The Australian hit a 25-yard shot which spun off City's Gareth Whalley and left goalkeeper Gary Walsh helpless.

Bradford had dominated with Isaiah Rankin coming close, Gunnar Halle clearing John Dreyer's header off the line and Peter Beagrie hitting the bar.

But Leeds controlled the second half and could have doubled their lead.

They play Leicester in the next round.
