Turkey has confirmed that it will not pay damages awarded to a Greek Cypriot woman by the European Court of Human Rights on the last day for settlement of the payment.

The court awarded the woman Titina Loizidou around seven-hundred thousand dollars after ruling that Turkey had violated her human rights by denying her access to her property in the Turkish-controlled north of Cyprus.

The BBC Ankara correspondent says Turkey's refusal to make the payment could lead to its suspension from the Council of Europe and complicate its strained relations with the European Union.
