Speaking in London after the judgment, the Chilean deputy foreign minister, Mario Fernandez, told reporters his government welcomed the outcome as positive.
He went on to say that people with accusations against General Pinochet should bring them in Chile itself, where the judiciary was also independent.
Lawyers acting for the Chilean former ruler say they are starting proceedings to have him released on bail - in effect, to have the police guard on him in hospital withdrawn.
