Hegg and Tudor given England debuts

Big chance: Tudor takes a rest during England training in Perth

Lancashire wicketkeeper Warren Hegg and Surrey fast bowler Alex Tudor are making their England debuts after being named in the side for the opening match of the Australian tour.

Cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew analyses the selections (Radio 5 Live)
The first-time tourists were both selected for the traditional festival match against an ACB Chairman's XI at Lilac Hill on Thursday.

But there are few hints in the team as to the selectors' first-choice line-up - these can be found instead in a stronger-looking 12 that has been chosen for the four-day game against Western Australia at Perth's WACA ground starting at the weekend.

All 17 members of the touring party will be given a run-out this week as England try to ensure no one is lacking in match practice.

Tour manager Graham Gooch said: "Everybody has got a game in the first two matches so they can get used to Australian conditions.

"We have named seven batsmen against Western Australia so we can keep our options open.

"Tudor has made progress in the nets so we are giving him an outing. It is a chance for him to get experience in Australian conditions and a chance to impress."

Old foes face England

The ACB team is a mixture of past and present, with former Test men Dennis Lillee, Graeme Wood and Bruce Reid selected alongside such players as opener Matthew Elliott, who made his mark with 199 against England in the 1997 Ashes series.

But despite the old faces in the opposition, Gooch insists England will be taking the game seriously: "We know that's it's a carnival atmosphere but there's no such thing as a friendly game in Australia."

Captain Alec Stewart will only play as a batsman at his former ground Lilac Hill, where he spent eight seasons playing grade cricket for Midland-Guildford.

Hegg will take Stewart's gloves for the opening match, before the skipper assumes his wicketkeeping duties for the Western Australia showdown.

Tudor takes his place in what looks like a second-choice bowling attack at Lilac Hill, alongside Dean Headley, Dominic Cork, Ben Hollioake and Peter Such.

The squad for the tougher WACA match bears a more striking resemblence to the possible Test line-up.

Bowlers Darren Gough, Angus Fraser, Alan Mullally and Robert Croft team up with Cork for the first four-day game.

And Graham Thorpe, who missed most of the summer series against South Africa, returns to a strong batting line-up.

M A Butcher (Surrey), M A Atherton (Lancs), M R Ramprakash (Middlesex), A J Stewart (Surrey, capt), J P Crawley (Lancs), B C Hollioake (Surrey), D T Cork (Derbyshire), W K Hegg (Lancs, wk), A J Tudor (Surrey), D W Headley (Kent), P M Such (Essex).
