Patten praises Hong Kong for defending freedoms

The last British governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten, who's on his first visit there since it was handed over to China last year, has praised the territory's people for defending their rights under Beijing's rule.

Mr Patten said people in Hong Kong had shown considerable self-confidence in standing up for their freedoms.

Mr Patten is promoting his book about Asia , which warns against giving China special treatment on issues such as human rights.

A BBC Correspondent in Hong Kong says this warning is potentially embarrassing at a time when Britain is hailing a new and closer relationship with Beijing.
