AIDS conference opens in Kenya

A national conference on AIDS has opened in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, to boost efforts at combating the spread of the HIV virus in the country.

The number of Kenyans infected by the virus has doubled to ten percent since the last conference there five years ago.

Part of the work of the meeting, which is being attended by about six-hundred delegates, will be to review the impact of anti-AIDS campaigns.

The BBC correspondent in Nairobi says although research has shown that most people know what AIDS is, there is still confusion about how the HIV virus is spread and there's not enough change in sexual behaviour.
