ANC rebutts allegations of gross abuses

The African National Congress in South Africa says a leaked report that accused the organisation of gross human rights abuses was capricious and arbitrary.

In a twenty-five page response to the allegations, the ANC accused the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of besmirching the ANC's struggle against apartheid.

A section of the Commission report -- which is due to be presented to President Nelson Mandela on Thursday -- says the ANC was implicated in cases of torture, executions and civilian bomb attacks.

Correspondents say the ANC has been at odds with the Reconciliation Commission since it refused demands for a meeting with ANC officials to discuss the findings.
