India to review constitution

The Indian home minister, L K Advani, says the Indian government is planning to set up a commission to review the country's secular constitution.

In a television interview, Mr Advani said the review body would be created after elections in four Indian states next month.

He said it would consider the benefits of a presidential system, as a way of creating stability of government, and weigh its advantages with the accountability of a parliamentary democracy -- the system currently in place in India.

Correspondents say there's concern among India's large Moslem community at other proposals by the governing Hindu nationalist BJP party to enact legislation that would curtail religious rights.
