Luton sink troubled Coventry

Without Dion Dublin Coventry could not manage a shot on target

Luton 2-0 Coventry

Second Division Luton completed a miserable day for Coventry by knocking the Premiership side out of the Worthington Cup at Kenilworth Road.

Coventry v Luton: Match profile
The Sky Blues, with club captain and top scorer Dion Dublin out of their line-up as he considers a move to Blackburn, crashed out of the third round with a 2-0 loss.

Lennie Lawrence's men carried the fight to Coventry from the start and the troubled Premiership outfit were not up to the challenge, failing to muster a single shot on target in the 90 minutes.

Northern Ireland international Phil Gray, enjoying his second spell at Kenilworth Road, brought back memories of the Hatters' finest hour when they beat Arsenal at Wembley 10 years ago to claim this trophy.

His 50th-minute strike, after a swift move that carved the defence open, rocked Coventry before Steve Davis finished off the Premiership club with a second 12 minutes from time.

A well-placed far post header from a corner by Graham Alexander gave him his seventh goal of the season and put the game beyond Coventry's reach.

'We were embarrassed'

After the match Coventry manager Gordon Strachan tore into his team.

"It's okay getting beaten but we were embarrassed" he said. "People were laughing at us.

"Luton were bigger in terms of passing the ball, heart, the will to win, and in terms of energy. The only way we were bigger was in terms of egos.

"We were weak-minded and it's not on. It will not continue like that.

"But all credit goes to Luton who played very well."
