Henman sees off Woodforde

Henman: Ninth in the world, eighth in the race for Hanover

Tim Henman stayed on course for a place at the prestigious ATP Tour World Championship next month, with a second-round win over Mark Woodforde at the Eurocard Open in Stuttgart.

Britain's leading player struggled in the first set, before stepping up a gear in the second to see off the Australian doubles specialist 7-5 6-1.

Henman, ranked number nine in the world rankings, is eighth in the list of potential qualifiers for the World Championship event in Hanover. Only eight players qualify for the season's final showpiece tournament.

He will guarantee his place in Hanover if he reaches the Eurocard final.

Boris Becker delighted his home fans with a 6-2 7-5 victory over Dutch qualifier Sjeng Schalken.
