Liverpool shaken but not stirred ![]() Liverpool's Michael Owen slips his markers Liverpool 3-1 Fulham Liverpool were given a scare by Fulham before they eventually blasted their way through to the fourth round of the Worthington Cup. After a goal-less first half Liverpool took a fortunate lead when David Thompson's 30-yard shot deflected wildly off Simon Morgan. But Kevin Keegan's side drew level with a brilliant 25-yard left-foot curling shot from Paul Peschisolido. An upset was ruled out when Robbie Fowler converted a 66th minute penalty and Paul Ince headed in the third. Barnsley 2-1 Bournemouth Barnsley survived a late fightback from Second Division Bournemouth after taking a two goal lead in this Worthington Cup third round tie. The home side went into the lead after 42 minutes when Ashley Ward converted a penalty after he was fouled by Ian Cox. It was Ward's tenth goal in 11 games and Barnsley doubled their lead through Jan Aage Fjorttoft. Bournemouth got their consolation goal four minutes from time through Mark Stein. Northampton 1-3 Tottenham
Sean Parrish capitalised on a poor Espen Baardsen clearance to chip him from 25 yards and put Northampton ahead. But Chris Armstrong pounced on a rebound to equalise and Sol Campbell put Spurs ahead with a 14-yard shot. David Ginola saw a penalty saved by Andy Woodman before Armstrong eased the nerves by easing a late third. Sunderland 2-1 Grimsby Republic of Ireland striker Niall Quinn struck Sunderland's winner five minutes from the end of extra time. With a penalty shoot-out looming, right back Chris Makin found Quinn, who controlled the ball on his chest before shooting low into the net. Grimsby had taken the lead when Lee Nogan scored after 11 minutes. But Sunderland equalised after 66 minutes thanks to Michael Bridges. Tranmere 0-1 Newcastle Paul Dalgligh gave Newcastle a Worthington Cup tonic with the only game of their goal against their First Division opponents. Dalglish claimed his first senior goal for the Geordies on the half-hour after Tranmere had made the early running. Nolberto Solano split the Tranmere defence with a superb pass. Dalglish took the ball in his stride and skipped around the challenge of goalkeeper John Achterberg to score. Norwich 1-3 Bolton (1-1 after extra-time) Bolton needed penalties to beat First Division rivals Norwich at Carrow Road. It was goal-less after 90 minutes, but Robbie Elliott tipped the scales Wanderers' way with the opening goal six minutes later. Transfer-listed striker Keith O'Neill levelled the scores for City boss Bruce Rioch against his old club. Charlton 1-2 Leicester A double blast from veteran striker Tony Cottee helped 1997 cup winners Leicester overcome Premiership rivals Charlton 2-1 at the Valley. Cottee grabbed his first seven minutes into the second half when he cooly slid the ball in form close range. But Charlton hit back within five minutes when Paul Mortimer pounced on a poor clearance from Kasey Keller. Charlton's joy was short-lived as Cottee grabbed the winner from a cross by Muzzy Izzet in the 61st minute. |
