Strength in the technology sector boosted leading shares in New York as investors looked favourably on the interest rate outlook.

The Dow Jones index was 60 points higher at 8492, with the Nasdaq 20 ahead at 1745.

The Standard & Poor's 500-Stock Index was up 9 points.

Internet stocks found particular favour on the back of the strength in the technology sector, with eBay moving 22% higher.

Among leading stocks, which have been rather weaker in the last two session, American Express was stronger.

Advancing issues led declining issues by 2-to-1 in total volume of some 99m shares.
