11-year-olds in school heroin shock

Craigton School, where the drugs were found

A police inquiry has begun after an 11-year-old boy was found with heroin at a school in Glasgow.

Andrew Cassell: "Officers recovered drugs with a street value of five hundred pounds"
Another boy, also 11, was taken to hospital after tasting a small amount of the drug. He was released without treatment.

Police are thought to have ruled out any possibility that the boy with the drugs was dealing in the school.

Reports said the drugs, contained in 50 professional wraps and with a street value of £500, were found in a satchel.

Local people give their reactions to the discovery
A teacher at Craigton Primary School found what she believed to be drugs and reported the incident to the headteacher.

"The boy was interviewed and police enquiries are continuing", a police spokesman said.

"Police also interviewed other pupils within the class and are working in conjunction with the local education authority."

Chief Inspector Robin Howie said: "This was a great surprise to us." A meeting to attempt to allay parents' fears had been held on Tuesday morning, which he described as "very positive".

A Glasgow council spokesman said education authorities were aware of an incident and a statement on the matter would be issued later.

Gaille McCann, a founder of Mothers Against Drugs, said she was "absolutely horrified".

CI Robin Howie: "Positive meeting"
Ms McCann, a Glasgow councillor, who helped found the group in the city's Cranhill district after the death of 13-year-old Alan Harper, said the find highlighted the dangers posed to young children.

"I'm surprised by the quantity found on the boy - it was a lot and it could have killed the whole class.

"If he was being used a courier then that's a big amount even for a courier," she said.

"The dealers have reached a stage where they are blase about it all and feel untouchable if they can do something like this", she said.

"Communities can only do so much and the dealers are laughing at the legal system. Where's the deterrent? There's none. That's how ridiculous the system has become."
